Beginner Holdem strategy
Texas Holdem is one of the most popular table games and most played poker variants. However, this type of game is much more complex than many players would think, and it requires more skills than most of them imagine. Holdem is not about luck; it’s all about good strategies. But before discussing that, there must be clarified a few aspects: what exactly makes this type of poker differ from the various others? What are the basic rules of playing Holdem?
The rules applied for Holdem are similar to the ones of most other poker variants: each player attempts to form the best possible hand, consisting of five cards: the main two that he has in hand, and other three from the five table cards.
Players may also form pairs using only one card from his hand and four out of the five cards placed on the table, or they could even use just the cards placed down, if they do form a hand, but this tactic is very risky, since it can be used at the same time by other players as well.
The element that adds a personal note to Holdem which will make this type of poker differentiate from the others is the blind. This is basically the bet that every player from the table is placing each round.
The first blind is set before even receiving the two cards the players would be holding in hand. Then, everyone must place another blind after each round revealing table cards. So, after the flop, or first three table cards are revealed, the players need to call another blind. The same thing will happen after the turn (after the fourth card is laid on the table), and, once again, after the river ( the last one out of the five cards revealed).
The player with the strongest hand and that hasn’t folded out takes the win.
Now, having everything cleared out, let’s take a moment and discuss which are the best strategies that should be approached by the player according to his professional level. The strategies will be split into three main categories: beginner Holdem strategies, intermediate Holdem strategies, and Pro Holdem strategies.
1. First step – Anticipating the moves
Poker is a strategic game where players need to adapt their playing technique in function of their opponent’s style of playing. To start off, gamblers will have to learn first how to identify the type of players you are dealing with and find the weakest one of them.
Now, the strategy you need to develop depends on what type of game you choose: cash games or tourney. When you play for cash, where you got an unlimited number of re-buys, the best solution would be for you to focus on the gameplay only, and less on the opponents’ strategies. They’ll eventually fail without having you making pressures on them.
What you will have to do is trick them into thinking you have a stronger hand, when you actually don’t and make them think they have a chance against you, when you actually have the strongest hand.
2. Table position
The first beginner Holdem strategy will not be the best solution for players sitting near the button, and will never be, under any circumstances, a strategy you should apply before The turn. Before you make up your mind and try to apply a strategy, you must see the flop and if you can make any combinations with the cards revealed and what you have in hand.
Beginners need to take into account as well their position at the table. Being closer to the button they’ll have to face one big problem: they are forced to place a bet before the other players do. If the players find himself in such position he has to be patient and avoid placing a big bet before watching the other players’ moves and seeing the cards.
A common mistake newbies usually make is applying the first strategy from the beginning of the game. Avoid doing this. Wait for the game to come closer to an end before trying to fool your opponents.
3. Try to analyze your odds of winning
A good player must first learn what to expect. Maths is very important in poker. Try to anticipate all the possibilities after the Turn, and see whether you have more chances of winning, or of losing.
After doing that, you’ll see the things will simplify a lot – the next step is taking into account the players who still remained in the game. Watch their bets, and anticipate their moves. See if they have bigger winning chances than yours.
